Custom Cake FAQs

When should I book?

The earlier the better! I'm a one-woman show, so spots fill up fast, especially in the wedding frenzy months (May-June and Sept-Oct).

If you need a last minute cake, or a no-fuss ordering process, I’ve got a great selection in the Online Bakeshop.

Do you make vegan/gluten free/allergen friendly desserts?

I offer gluten free cakes and desserts for those with gluten sensitivities. I do not offer vegan or dairy free desserts.

Allergens: While I take precautions, my kitchen is not a dedicated allergen-free facility. Equipment may come into contact with nuts, gluten, and other common allergens. If you or your guests have severe allergies, I recommend contacting a bakery with a dedicated allergen-free facility to ensure everyone can safely enjoy a treat.

Do you make character cakes or photo cakes?

While I don't create cakes that directly depict copyrighted characters (due to copyright laws), I'm happy to make a cake in a specific color scheme or theme to match your party! You're also welcome to provide your own character toppers to add to the cake.

I also don't offer printed photo cakes, but I can often incorporate elements of a design or photo into a hand-decorated cake. Just ask, and I'll let you know what's possible!

How do I secure booking?

Once we've fine-tuned all the details, you can book it with a full payment or a 50% deposit. Dates are not reserved until an order and payment are in place.

What is your pricing structure?

All cakes start at $7.75 per serving. This base price covers the cake, buttercream, and a simple finish (like a semi-naked, smooth, or textured buttercream coat).

Extra fillings, flavors, and more complex designs (those with intricate details, toppers, etc.) will increase the price. I'm always happy to work with you to create a cake that fits your budget and vision!

Can I request a custom design or flavor not listed?

Absolutely! Let's chat about your ideas.

Flavors: If I have a trusted recipe, you're in luck! New flavor territory? I've got plenty of delicious options on the menu to choose from.

Designs: I'm happy to customize within my style and abilities. If it's outside my expertise, I'll be upfront and we can find a fabulous alternative. Need something totally different? I can happily recommend another talented baker.

Do you offer Tastings or Consultations?

Cake Tastings:

I offer cake and dessert bar tastings in my online bakeshop! Choose from pre-set flights, build your own custom box, or sample a variety of dessert bar treats. Order online and enjoy in the comfort of your own home. [

Consultations:

I'm happy to chat! I offer consultations for wedding cakes, larger events, and custom cakes with more intricate designs. We can connect by phone or meet in person over coffee (we can even combine it with a tasting!).

Do you deliver?

I'm happy to deliver your cake! Local delivery is available within 10 miles of Salem City. for $50. Beyond that, delivery fees are calculated based on the distance to your venue.

To get a quote for delivery, please fill out the inquiry form and provide your event location.

For smaller orders, you're also welcome to pick up your cake from my location.

Important Notes:

During peak wedding seasons (May-June and Sept-Oct), there is a minimum order requirement of $500 to qualify for delivery. For cakes with three or more tiers, delivery is required to ensure safe transportation.

How does pick up work?

Takes the Cake is a home-based bakery, so pickups are by appointment only. Once your order is paid, you'll receive the address and a link to my online scheduler to choose your pickup time.

Prefer a contactless pickup? Just let me know, and I'll arrange a porch pickup with my trusty cooler!

How do I store the cake before the event?

Your cake will be chilled and ready for pickup. This helps keep the buttercream looking its best and ensures a safe trip home. Once you arrive, pop it in the fridge until about 2 hours before you're ready to serve it.

Cakes are happiest (and tastiest!) at room temperature. Just a heads-up: cheesecakes and cakes with curd or fruit fillings should be kept cool when not being served.
