Cake Transport and Care 101
Transporting your Cake
When you pick up your cake, it will be chilled and securely placed in a bakery box. A chilled cake helps keep the buttercream nice and sturdy for safe transport.
For tiered cakes, sturdy supports will be placed on the bottom tiers, along with a central dowel running through the entire cake to prevent shifting.
Keep It Level: Ensure your cake sits on the flattest part of your vehicle, like the back of an SUV or the floorboard. Avoid placing it on seats or laps.
Keep It Cold: Crank up the A/C and minimize errands during transport. In colder months, resist the urge to turn up the heat, as it can soften or melt the buttercream.
Drive Carefully: Imagine grandma sitting in the backseat with her favorite dress and an uncovered pot of chili. Drive cautiously, avoiding sudden stops, and be extra careful around curves, bumps, and railroad tracks.
Caring for Your Cake
Storage Before Serving: Store uncut cakes in the refrigerator and allow them to come to room temperature before serving, which usually takes 1-3 hours depending on the size.
Unboxing: Flatten the box completely and use a knife to lift the edge of the cake drum for easy removal. Avoid lifting the cake drum with your fingers to prevent mishaps!
Storage After Serving: For any leftover cake, place a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the exposed area to prevent drying out. Cakes with fruit fillings should be stored in the refrigerator.
